In a 2022 study by Enterprise Strategy Groupi, 50% of the IT security professionals surveyed said their organizations were experiencing ransomware attacks at least monthly. One in ten reported their organizations were being attacked daily.
LTO tape technology can help organizations mitigate the impact of a ransomware attack and dramatically lower the costs associated with cybercrime. What makes LTO a key weapon in the fight against ransomware is that it’s the only truly offline storage solution that can place Enterprise data behind a physical, disconnected, air gap barrier.
Tape should be the final part of the 3-2-1-1 rule that proposes maintaining three copies of their data, on at least two different media types, with one stored offsite and one stored offline.

THE VALUE OF LTO TECHNOLOGY
Safeguarding against ransomware is not the only way that LTO tape technology adds value to your data protection and data management strategies.
According to IDC’s Datasphere report, the number of data generating and data consuming devices is growing at around 5% annually. By 2027, this number is expected to reach 69.7 Billion devices. IDC predicts that by 2027, the Datasphere of data generated annually will reach a staggering 291.7 ZBii, the overwhelming majority of which will be Enterprise, rather than consumer data. But with a 14 generation roadmap, projecting media capacities of 913 TB (compressed) per cartridge, LTO tape technology is poised to become the big data storage platform of the future.

A recent studyiii found that in 93% of ransomware incidents, the threat actors target connected backup repositories, resulting in 75% of victims losing at least some of their backups during the attack, and more than one-third (39%) of these backups being completely lost. LTO tape technology can make your backup and restore processes ultra secure by allowing you to keep copies of your business data completely offline and disconnected from all network activity. Ransomware cannot compromise data that it cannot access.
The cold data oceans of the future will have more in common with the Antarctic than with the warmer seas of the Tropics. But the extraordinary rise of a vast, largely inert information store presents a number of challenges relating to sustainability that tape technology uniquely addresses. By deploying LTO technology, organizations can dramatically reduce CO2 emissions associated with storing archive data and help lower the environmental impact of long term data retentioniv.
Using LTO technology for long term data storage can dramatically lower the cost of storing and managing data over timeframes spanning decades in comparison to all-disk or all-cloud solutionsv. With extremely low cost per TB, high storage density to maximize data center resources and vast and flexible scalability, tape is better suited to the colossal data storage demands of the looming ‘yottabyte era’.
