What is the Linear Tape File System (LTFS)?
The Linear Tape File System (LTFS) makes it easy to quickly and precisely locate and retrieve any
item of data stored on an LTO Ultrium tape cartridge. LTFS works in conjunction with LTO
technology’s partitioning feature to speed up and simplify access to data stored on LTO Ultrium
and is included with all generations since LTO-5. LTO LTFS data compression made easy.
LTFS partitioning allows a portion of the tape to be reserved for indexing, which tells the drive precisely where in the tape a file is stored. The second partition holds the actual file. The indexing information is first read by the drive and presented in a simple, easy-to-use format that allows for drag-and-drop capabilities. It’s as fast and straightforward as searching and retrieving data volumes stored on a USB flash drive.
