Finally, the LTO Program is back on the road!

LTO IS BACK ON THE ROAD

In this BlogBytes article we are going to give you a preview of what you can expect to see and learn when you visit the LTO booth including a special guest star musical entertainer!

At NAB, movie producers, post-production storage executives and video entrepreneurs will be hunting for effective means to help manage and protect their valuable rich media content and how to do it economically.  With the advent of 3D, IMAX, 4K, 8K, and more, content objects have become massive, and the volume is substantially greater.  These huge content stores must be accessible for monetary and production purposes as well as protected from cyber threats, theft and sabotage. As highlighted in a media and entertainment industry white paper, “Safe, secure, and efficient digital storage of media content remains a critical industry requirement and practice.”

SAFE AND SECURE

LTO technology is a safe, secure, and efficient storage resource. It has been shown to be up to 86% less expensive than disk or cloud, and can be the ultimate safeguard against cyber-attack and malware.

As described in a cyber data protection article, “LTO tape technology is intrinsically offline. That is, when a data cartridge is removed from the tape drive an “air gap” exists between the data and the system helping to thwart unwanted access and cyber sabotage. In addition, tape cartridges can be easily transported to an offsite location, out of region, to protect the data from a primary site disaster or regional catastrophe. The offsite protected data can then be used to recover system operations.”

SIMPLE AND EASY TO USE

When you visit the LTO Program booth at NAB you will have the opportunity to see LTO-9 tape technology in action and the chance to ask the LTO experts how LTO-9 can help you save your rich media content with help from the Linear Tape File System (LTFS). LTFS has changed the game in the media and entertainment industry. It makes viewing and accessing tape files easier than ever. Read on to learn how a film producer put LTO tape and LTFS to work.

READY FOR A CLOSEUP?

Silverback Films is a production firm that specializes in the production of high quality wildlife films for both television and cinema. Their productions include Disneynature Penguins and the Our Planet series. Silverback Films had a number of critical storage requirements that needed a solution. As noted in a case study they wanted:

  • An industry standard storage format to deliver content to clients
  • Lower storage costs—not cost effective to keep large video archive in on-line storage
  • Easy process to retrieve digital content from video to archive
  • Secure method to protect valuable video assets from disaster and sabotage

Silverback Films installed two LTO tape automation libraries with an LTFS enabled system capable of multiple petabytes of storage. The system allows proxy file editing that conform back to raw footage on LTO tapes formatted with LTFS which provide the industry standard format for content delivery to clients. A second copy of the tapes is offline protecting content against hacker and malware attacks.
