The task list for IT managers consists of a number of essential responsibilities including three key storage imperatives: Long term data security, reliable storage devices, and cost effectiveness. In this BlogBytes article we will discuss these important storage attributes and how a video production crew changed their content storage paradigm to adopt these key objectives and get peace of mind. Spoiler alert – LTO technology plays a starring role!
GOTTA BE SECURE!
Long term data security must take in to account the threat from cyber criminals. A recent survey of IT and cybersecurity professionals showed that nearly 80% had experienced a ransomware attack within the last year and a third of those had been attacked multiple times! It behooves an organization to be prepared for cyber battle. LTO technology is a key requisite for attaining long lasting data security and cyber-attack readiness. Ransomware attacks focus on data that resides online. Therefore, getting that information offline and out of reach is a prime objective to protect it long term. When an LTO cartridge is removed from the drive an air gap is created. That is, the data is no longer accessible to the system or to cyber-criminals nefarious online attacks. Bingo!
MUST BE HIGHLY RELIABLE
Of course, when we store data on a device we hope that we can reliably retrieve it when needed. A technical review by the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) details an evaluation of LTO generation-9 technology. The review shows that LTO-9 technology has better reliability than similar capacity hard disk drive technology. As explained in the paper; “with LTO-9’s uncorrectable bit error rate (UBER) of less than 1020, it is extremely rare to see failed reads in real life, which translates to a reliability of seventeen 9s over a period of one year, whereas current similar HDDs have a reliability of only twelve 9s.”
COST EFFECTIVE = SUPERB
The third attribute in this must have trilogy is cost effectiveness. Let’s get right to it. LTO technology has been shown to be the least costly form of digital storage. A television producer found that storing content on LTO-9 tape was 2.3 times less costly than their previous disk system and a TCO study showed that an LTO solution was 86% lower cost than that of an all-disk solution. That is superb!
VIDEO CREW FOCUSES ON LTO-9 TAPE
Have you ever seen a pool ball shot from a canon in slow motion? It’s quite a hoot! That’s exactly what the SloMo Guys video production crew has done. This crew has a number of creative slow motion action events that are fun to watch but they also consume massive amounts of storage. These huge video productions drove the SloMo crew to abandon their costly hard disk storage and adopt the security and low cost benefits of LTO technology. The guys exclaimed, “We can store everything we have shot so far and everything new for many years to come on the LTO technology, this gives us peace of mind.” See the case study here.
Storing data long term, securely, reliably and economically is essential – use LTO technology. Worried about cyberattacks? Get more ransomware data security info in this short video.
