BlogBytes has discussed a number of topics this year, from ransomware attacks to users storing massive amounts of data on tape. This BlogBytes article highlights the Top 3 BlogBytes of 2024 based on readers’ responses. Have fun reviewing these favorites!

#1 – RANSOMWARE ATTACKS – THEY’RE BAAAACK!
The Enterprise Strategy Group conducted a survey and found that 79% of the respondent organizations had been affected by ransomware attacks that year. The attacks haven’t gone away; they are back in a big way. This BlogBytes article examines this horrible trend and how you can defend against these disruptors with help from LTO technology. The article begins by reviewing a ransomware attack on a cloud host service provider. As described in the write-up, “The attackers succeeded in encrypting all servers’ disks, as well as on the primary and secondary backup system, whereby all machines crashed and we lost access to all data.” Not a pretty sight. Check out the number one BlogBytes of the year to get the rest of the story and how you can use air-gapping and the 3-2-1-1 backup strategy to protect your data. See the #1 BlogBytes here.

#2 – RANSOMWARE DEEP DIVE – HOW TO PROTECT YOUR DATA
Cyberattacks, especially ransomware, are top of mind for data center execs. This BlogBytes reviewed a comprehensive white paper by David Balcar that dives deep in to the ransomware realm. The paper, called “Exploring the Ransomware Epidemic: Unraveling the Past, Understanding the Present, and Anticipating Future Threats,” explores the genesis of ransomware, examines ransomware incidents, reveals how these bad actors break in to data systems, and how you can prepare, prevent and defend against these insidious assaults. As noted in the BlogBytes article, “this ransomware paper is bursting with useful information on how to plan your cybersecurity defenses more effectively, identify ransomware threats and provide more resilience to withstand criminal attempts to disrupt or destroy your data.”

#3 – WEATHER FORECASTERS REACH AN EXABYTE OF STORED DATA!
How big is an Exabyte of data? As this BlogBytes reveals, an Exabyte is “a one followed by 18 zeroes which, to give that number context, equates to over 350 billion digital pictures.” Yep, that’s hard to fathom but not for the scientists at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, ECMWF. They reached this data storage achievement by storing an Exabyte of data on tape technology. Two of ECMWF’s scientists candidly speak to this accomplishment and also share how they moved their entire data processing facility across Europe which included tens of thousands of data tapes, a lot of tape libraries, and of course a bunch of tape drives.
