In case you missed it, World Backup Day was March 31st. So what’s the big deal? In this BlogBytes article, you will learn what the deal is and how to make sure that deal doesn’t deal you and your organization out. Sure, a little play on words – it will all make sense as you read on. Deal me in!

APRIL FOOLS’ COULD BE ANY DAY
Some may say that world backup day was initiated on March 31 st because April Fools’ is the next day and no one wants to foolishly lose precious data on April first or any day for that matter as noted in this Forbes article. Interestingly, the article notes that “Western Digital, another major supplier of hard disk
drives, recently published results from an online survey of 6,118 respondents from 10 countries. 79% of the participants actively backup their content, with the majority of them doing so because they fear losing important files. Of those who don’t back up their data, one third of them don’t know how to back
up their data.” That is a risky and unfortunate deal.

DON’T LOSE DATA TO PIRATES
Losing data can cause havoc since data disasters and data pirates can strike at any time and on any day.
An article in vmblog.com emphasizes that periodically, and on world backup day of course, you should exercise the due diligence to “review your data resilience strategy and ensure your ability to protect your data against the ‘ever-evolving’ threats.” The on-going advice is to have “secure, on-prem [sic] storage as one of your resiliency zones [which] lets you recover your data at the fastest speed possible no matter the status of your external connections.” We will talk more about backup strategies in a minute – it’s a big deal.

AI AND DATA PROTECTION
AI has become the current focus for many organizations and is an important consideration when implementing data security strategies. This ITProToday.com article stresses that “As AI powers business innovation and cybercriminals leverage it to automate attacks, protecting your data becomes essential.” The article continues to emphasize that “your data is … the lifeblood of AI. To fully leverage its potential, you must ensure your data is secure, accessible, and protected — because losing it is simply not an option.”

HELD TO RANSOM
We have all heard of horrible data disaster experiences. Don’t be one of those that gets cyber-attacked with data destroyed or held for ransom. Follow the suggestions illustrated in a datacenterknowledge.com write-up that says to “Follow methods like the 3-2-1 rule. Regularly test backups to ensure they work when needed, preventing costly data loss.” The 3-2-1 rule is good but the 3-2-1-1 storage backup strategy is even better. Here’s how it works as explained by IDC in a resent BlogBytes article: a 3-2-1-1 backup strategy … means “three copies of the data on two different types of media, with one copy onsite and offline and one copy offsite and offline.” Tape storage is ideal for implementing that backup strategy allowing you to effectively deal with unexpected disasters and intrusions.
